iOS 16 beta introduces Apple Pay support in third-party browsers

Apple revealed the upcoming large updates to the operating system during the main keynote of WWDC22. Ipados 16 introduces rearranged Windows applications on the iPad M1, while MacOS Ventura includes a slimmer UI element. In fact, you could say, iOS 16 packs the most interesting changes. The iPhone lock screen gets a complete design with support for widgets and advanced customization. This special update focuses on providing user options, and this personalization develops outside the lock screen. Users on iOS 16 Beta can use Apple Pay on Chrome, Edge, and there seems to be another web browser. On iOS 15 and the previous version, this feature remains exclusive for safari.

As highlighted by Steve Moser on Twitter, iOS 16 Beta did not limit Apple Pay to Safari. This addition is likely due to changes in the underlying webkit. All iPhone web browsers are forced to depend on webkit machines. So every adjustment made by Apple for it affects all iPhone web browsers.

On the Mac is a different story. Apple does not force the developer to adopt a webkit in their web browser. This could be why even the latest Beta MacOS Ventura build builds still do not allow non-Safari users to use Apple Pay. It is still unclear whether this will change on the road.

Apple Pay support in the third -party iPhone browser is the addition that is welcomed. Those in iOS 16 do not need to jump between Chrome and Safari just to complete online purchases. The change has the potential to help the Cupertino company avoid several lawsuits of antimonopoly laws as well.
